And you thought "you" were a baller! Jahm Najafi has just proven himself the Ultimate Domainer. I love this story!! Congratulations Mr. Najafi.. well done sir.
A big bag of money 'and' pixelated in the WSJ.. Quite a week for this gent.
What the story misses is it's not just "the market".. there is real intrinsic underlying latent value and untapped potential within the portfolio of domain names Network Solutions administers.

Interesting how you keep coming back to the untapped value of domains (I assume generic names)... do you also see any value on plays like the next gen *surface* microsoft product? Looks like after BG confirmed they were parterning with some retailers all surfacexxxxxx.com are gone. Could these quasi-generics compete against the real deal?
***FS*** I'm mainly about the generic things.. names that have a lot of meaning and to a lot of different people. The internet is still young.. I like this surface product because it encourages people to stay online.. It will absolutely have an input device of some kind. I feel good about the space and the future.. Probably more so than ever.

Getting back to Mr Najafi. This guy is a real genius, and I may actually owe an awful lot to his intransigence.
He took on Network Solution at a time when its book value was being discounted due to the opening of the markets to competition. He, however, realised that however much you exploit the majority of individual domain holders, it probably won't motivate them to move away. So when the rest of the Industry were cutting their throats to get his business, he was happy to let any Client that wouldn't stump up $35 renewal walk. Very clever strategy, as comparatively few did.
Network Solutions also ejected all its IDN domain owners as it felt the cost of support would be higher than for ordinary domains. This was one of the single biggest factors in the total collapse of the IDN Market, because at that time NetSol was still God. He created the vacuum that I was able to exploit. I owe this guy an awful lot, but as he never gave a sucker an even break, there will be no case of champagne from this quarter.
***FS*** Nice comment sir..
