This delay in filing is related to an ongoing options inquiry. Still it got me thinking.. we often talk about registrar failure, but what about registry failure? The Registerfy situation is a wake-up call for us all. ICANN should create a back-up plan - some kind of 'Registry Rescuer' (a Plunge Protection Team) in case the unthinkable happens. It also puts ICANN in a stronger position to de-accredit registries who break the rules and non-complying registries.
Speaking of registrars....we have quite a few domains ( not a real lot, but well into the thousands), and have often thought if it was worth it to just get a registry to manage our own domains. Haven't really worked the numbers. Say you really wanted a registry simply to maintain a handle on your own portfolio, is there any rule that requires a party to have your registry up and running to accept others registrations within any kind of specific time frame? Could you just string it out indefinitely? Wouldn't want to break any rules here. There are more than a few registrars out there who should have their license yanked. Some real sleazy characters that have been well discussed.
