Don't buy into this client-sponsored hype. How many people did they talk to and where were they with this open-ended leading question? At Costco- then they mentioned what they see around them (remember sublimital example of how you rig the answer you want). On the street in Times Square where hints are all around. Are they shopping in a grocery store... at Nascar where Fords go by and coke is served? Talk to 3 seo people and they'll never mention Oversee but talk to 3 domainers and they'll tout Yahoo/Google.
The word "brand" is here thought of like a product they feel, touch and drink... not like a search engine. Do they say MS because they are all MSN walled garden accounts on their Dell?
Brands are about relationships. Few consumers have a relationship with Google they see it like a utility-- like your street light there to serve you-- not for you to be seen around town with ----and if they are on MSN, Google doesn't exist.
Usually this kind of poll is sponsored by USOC or some other big tricket marketing plan and its then used to recruit the brands as sponsors arguing you have to be there because this is how the public perceives you. Or to pitch naming a stadium to. Or to prove to the brands that their $10mm investment in sponsoring Live Earth paid off.
In other surveys Apple and Google rule. But a lot of new businesses are up there too.

Noted that 2700 people were surveyed online- so it could have been through MSN and offered a free Zune to take a survey which may have included sponsored offers and opt-ins. Odd that MS just creeps back up at the time of the iPhone launch.
Consider Apple has 666K people logging into dotMAC; 550K logging on their phone, god knows how many downloading music. If you took an interactive survey at this portal it would be different.
The more I've been blogging the more I realize everyone is passing on self-serving poop. The reporters, fearing for the jobs, and wanting a story in such a competitive environment are just passing through as written by the clients (which we all can take from PR Newswire then compare to the AP branded version on Drudge then the more designed and strategically placed version that I see in the Sun Sentinel when I go to Starbucks.) Try it, Frank. Your story from the wire will read the same as the one in the Sentinel, but they are better cloaking it in the image of official. To see the point look at my recent dictionary sale coverage and Marchex local announcements which I simply cut and pasted from the press release on their sites. The versions you published are seemingly from a credible source yet the copy is the same.
